Abstract: Wastewater is heavily loaded with various pollutants, which would pose the problem of health risks associated with its discharge into the natural environment and its reuse, if it had not undergone prior purification. The Cap Falcon wastewater treatment plant, located in the town of Ain Turk in the state of Oran, treats domestic effluents using the activated sludge process. The Physic-chemical and bacteriological results obtained revealed that the raw wastewater entering the WWTP exhibits fairly high organic, nitrogen and bacteriological pollution. For purified water, the purification yields for suspended matter, the chemical (COD) and biochemical (BOD5) oxygen demands, global nitrogen and total phosphorus represent respectively by 93%, 95%, 98%, 77%, and 84%. The comparison of the analyzed parameters of purified water with the standards of the official journal of the Algerian Republic (OJAR) and WHO show that these waters do not present any danger as regards their discharge into the natural environment. On the other hand, the bacteriological parameters did not meet the USEPA standard for reuse of wastewater for irrigation purposes. This is why we have proposed more cost-effective solutions and strategies aimed at improving the quality of treated water.
