To warn of possible flooding at the outlet of a watershed, we must be able to estimate the flow. But, for most watersheds, water level measurements are virtually absent, hence the inability to monitor flows in real time. The use of a rainfall-runoff model appears to be essential. The purpose of this study is to develop effective rainfall-runoff models for estimating flood flows of scarce frequencies, applicable in the watershed of M'Zab valley. The first work is to study the watershed of M'Zab valley terms geomorphological, lithological, climatic and hydrographic and analyze the hydrological processes primarily responsible for the genesis of floods. After listing themain hydrological rainfall-runoff models, the choice was on the application of two models that have proved their robustness and their performance at international level: the semi-distributed model HEC-HMS and the global model of ORSTOM which is a classical purely deterministic model. Results show that both models are able to estimate, in a fast, flood flows of scarce frequencies and few other features of the floodand lead to the layout of the flood hydrograph. The difference between the results obtained by these two models is small. Mathematical relations giving the characteristics of the flood according to the area of the watershed have been established using the model of ORSTOM. A hydrodynamic simulation of a section of M'Zab valley was made by HEC-RAS model using as basic data flow Centennial obtained by HEC-HMS model.en_US
